In our latest Meet the Manager blog we speak to Jess Smith, who has been part of the Castle family since 2010 and has recently transferred to manage our new Godalming nursery, Guardian House.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I’ve built 50 LEGO sets since COVID and counting. They all stay fully assembled…
What is your favourite thing about coming to work?
My favourite thing about coming to work is seeing the children’s faces light up with excitement as they discover something new, whether it’s a skill or idea, those moments of curiosity and pride is what makes each day special!
Equally, listening to the children’s stories about their weekends and holidays; hearing them share experiences and seeing how these moments shape their personalities.
Why did you choose to work in early years education?
I’ve loved helping others since I was young, I started by playing ‘teacher’ at home, and babysitting neighbours. Completing work experience at the SEND school my mum worked at confirmed that a career in care was for me. At college and university, I explored animal care and health and social care before finding my passion in childcare, and I’ve never looked back.
What passions do you have within the Early Years curriculum?
I’m passionate about helping children learn and grow through play that sparks curiosity and follows their interests. By providing a nurturing environment and strong, supportive relationships, I help children feel secure and valued. I do this while embedding curriculum goals through meaningful, play experiences that build curious, confident, and independent learners.
What’s the best thing about Guardian House?
The best thing about Guardian House is our natural, open-ended resources that spark children’s imagination and let them direct their own play. In our child-led, enabling environment, children are free to explore, create, and discover through play. Our beautifully newly refurbished building marks the start of our exciting journey in Godalming!
How do you create family partnerships at your nursery?
At Guardian House we build strong family partnerships from day one. From welcoming show-arounds and pre-start visits to baseline catch ups and parent events, communication is key. Our open-door policy ensures families feel involved, supported, and connected throughout their child’s nursery journey.
